The fundamental drive of all life is survival. Everything you do—from eating and sleeping to working and creating relationships—is motivated by the urge to survive. Dianetics recognizes eight dynamics (areas) of survival: self, family/sex, groups, mankind, life forms, physical universe, spiritual, and infinity. When your reactive mind interferes with your survival on any dynamic, you experience problems. Dianetics restores your natural ability to survive and thrive.

Man is Basically Good

Dianetics recognizes that people are fundamentally good, capable, and rational. When someone acts irrationally, destructively, or self-destructively, it's not because they're "mentally ill" or "evil"—it's because their reactive mind is influencing them. Remove the reactive mind's influence through Dianetics auditing, and the person's natural goodness, intelligence, and capability emerge. This principle is revolutionary: you're not broken and don't need to be "fixed." You just need to be freed from the reactive mind.

The Mind Has Two Parts: Analytical and Reactive

The analytical mind is your conscious, rational mind—it thinks, reasons, remembers, and makes decisions. It's like a perfect computer, capable of solving any problem if given accurate data. The reactive mind is unconscious and irrational—it stores engrams (painful experiences) and plays them back when triggered, causing irrational behavior and unwanted emotions. The analytical mind wants you to succeed; the reactive mind sabotages you. Dianetics erases the reactive mind, leaving you with full use of your analytical mind.

Engrams: The Source of Aberration

An engram is a recording of physical pain and unconsciousness, stored in the reactive mind. Engrams contain all perceptions present during the painful incident: sights, sounds, smells, physical sensations, emotions, and words. When restimulated (triggered by similar circumstances), engrams cause irrational behavior, psychosomatic illness, and unwanted emotions. All human aberration (irrational behavior) stems from engrams. Erase the engrams through Dianetics auditing, and the aberration disappears.

Clear: The Optimum State

Clear is the state achieved when a person no longer has their own reactive mind. All engrams have been erased.
