About Scientology
What is Scientology?
Scientology is an applied religious philosophy that provides exact methods to help you improve your life and achieve spiritual freedom. Founded by L. Ron Hubbard, it addresses the spirit—not the body or mind—and believes that man is far more than a product of his environment or his genes.
Is Scientology a religion?
Yes, Scientology is a recognized religion. It has churches, ordained ministers, religious services, and addresses fundamental questions about the nature of existence, the spirit, and man's relationship to the universe.
Who was L. Ron Hubbard?
L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986) was an American author, philosopher, and founder of Scientology. He wrote over 1,000 published works and developed the complete body of Scientology scripture. His research into the mind and spirit spans five decades.
What do Scientologists believe?
Scientologists believe that man is basically good, that he is seeking to survive, and that his survival depends on himself, his fellows, and his attainment of brotherhood with the universe. Scientologists believe that man is a spiritual being with capabilities far beyond those which he normally considers himself to possess.
Getting Started
How do I get started with Scientology?
The best way to start is to visit our church for a free tour and personality test. You can also begin with a free online course at scientologycourses.org, read an introductory book like 'Dianetics' or 'Scientology: The Fundamentals of Thought,' or attend a free introductory lecture.
Do I have to give up my current religion?
No. Scientology respects all religions. Many Scientologists practice Scientology while maintaining their original faith. Scientology is compatible with other religious beliefs and practices.
How much does it cost?
Initial services like church tours, personality tests, and some introductory materials are free. Books range from R200-R500. Courses vary in price depending on length and materials. Financial arrangements can be made, and no one is turned away for lack of funds.
How long does it take?
Scientology is a lifetime journey of spiritual advancement. However, you can experience benefits immediately. A Life Improvement Course takes 1-2 weeks, reading Dianetics takes a few days, and you'll notice improvements from the very first course or auditing session.
Courses & Services
What is auditing?
Auditing is Scientology's form of spiritual counseling. It's a one-on-one session with a trained auditor who helps you locate and address areas of spiritual distress, improving your awareness and ability. Auditing uses an E-Meter to help locate these areas.
What are Life Improvement Courses?
Life Improvement Courses are practical courses that address specific areas of life: communication, marriage, parenting, work, ethics, and more. They're short (1-2 weeks), affordable, and provide immediate tools you can use. No prior Scientology experience needed.
Can I take courses online?
Yes! Scientology offers 19 free online courses covering topics from communication to drug rehabilitation. These are self-paced and can be completed from home. Visit scientologycourses.org to start.
What is the Bridge to Total Freedom?
The Bridge is Scientology's spiritual path—a precise route to higher states of awareness and ability. It consists of two parallel paths: Training (learning to help others) and Auditing (personal spiritual counseling). Each step builds on the previous one.
Dianetics
What is Dianetics?
Dianetics is the science of the mind developed by L. Ron Hubbard. It addresses the reactive mind—the hidden source of nightmares, unreasonable fears, upsets, and insecurities. Dianetics provides a method to become Clear: free from the reactive mind.
What is the reactive mind?
The reactive mind is the portion of your mind that stores physical pain and painful emotion. It operates below your awareness and can cause irrational behavior, unwanted emotions, and psychosomatic illnesses. Dianetics addresses and resolves the reactive mind.
What is Clear?
Clear is a state achieved through Dianetics auditing where a person is free from the reactive mind. A Clear has no engrams (painful experiences stored in the reactive mind) and experiences greater happiness, stability, and mental clarity.
Should I read Dianetics first?
Yes, Dianetics is an excellent starting point. It's L. Ron Hubbard's first book and provides the foundation for understanding the mind. It's accessible, practical, and has helped millions worldwide. Many people start their Scientology journey with Dianetics.

No. Many successful business owners use Admin Technology without being Scientologists. The principles are practical and workable regardless of your religious beliefs. WISE welcomes all ethical businesses.
Parents & Children
Can Scientology help my child who's struggling in school?
Yes. L. Ron Hubbard developed Study Technology—methods that address the three barriers to learning. Study Tech has helped millions of students worldwide overcome learning difficulties, improve comprehension, and succeed academically. Applied Scholastics programs use this technology.
What is Scientology's position on psychiatric drugs for children?
Scientology, through CCHR (Citizens Commission on Human Rights), opposes the drugging of children for behavioral or learning issues. We believe there are effective, non-drug alternatives like Study Technology, proper nutrition, and addressing underlying causes. Parents should be fully informed of drug risks before medicating children.
Are there courses for parents?
Yes. We offer courses on parenting, child development, communication with children, and handling family conflicts. These provide practical tools to raise happy, capable children without resorting to punishment or psychiatric drugs.
South Africa
Why did L. Ron Hubbard focus on South Africa?
In 1960, L. Ron Hubbard prophesied that 'From Southern Africa will spring the next great civilization on this planet, and it will succeed because Scientology and all its Technology is on its side.' This vision guides our mission in South Africa today.
How can Scientology help South Africa's problems?
South Africa faces challenges like illiteracy, unemployment, corruption, and incompetence. Scientology offers practical solutions: Study Technology for education, Ethics Technology for integrity, Admin Technology for competent management, and The Way to Happiness for moral guidance.

No. Scientology is a recognized religion with millions of members worldwide, churches in major cities, and official recognition by governments. Members are free to come and go, maintain outside relationships, and practice their religion openly.
Why is there negative information about Scientology online?
Like any successful organization, Scientology has critics. Much online misinformation comes from anti-religious groups, disgruntled former members, or those with financial interests in attacking the church. We encourage you to visit, meet actual Scientologists, and form your own opinion based on firsthand experience.
Can I leave if I want to?
Yes. Scientology is a voluntary practice. Members are free to participate as much or as little as they choose, and can leave at any time. There are no contracts binding you to the church (except for staff positions, which have employment agreements like any job).
Will you try to recruit my family?
We welcome families and believe Scientology can help everyone. However, we respect individual choice. We don't pressure anyone to join, and we don't target family members. Each person decides for themselves whether Scientology is right for them.
